A major catastrophe has almost completely devastated the infrastructure of my country. The emergency government has decided that the surviving citizens will be best served if they are evacuated to other countries willing to take refugees. Me and my immediate family are among the survivors of this catastrophic event. However, we have absolutely no input into the final destination or in any other evacuation details. We are told that our host country’s culture is completely different from our own, and that we might have to stay there permanently. We are further told that, in addition to one change of clothes, we can only take 3 small items with us. I decide to take three items that I hold dear and that represent our family culture.
The three items I would choose:
1. The Holy Bible - The word of God is the foundation of my family. God's word is forever. His word is strength, comfort and a stable source of ongoing support throughout ANY situation or event. My family believes in abiding in His word, as He is the vine and we are the branches. If we abide in Him, and His word in abide in us, we will bear much fruit, for without Him, we can do NOTHING.
2. Toothbrush/Paste - Oral health and hygiene is extremely important to my family. Maintaining proper oral hygiene and health promotes the overall health and wellness of an individual.
3. Photo Album- Reminiscing of the good times and memories is an important past time for my family. It lifts the spirit and promotes a spirit of unity within our family.
If I were told that I could only keep one personal item and would have to give up the other two items I brought with me, I would be completely devastated. I would attempt to present an appropriate and tasteful defense in regards to why it was imperative that my family keep these three items. Despite such, if push comes to shove, the Holy Bible would remain with us.
- Through this activity, I realize how much the word of God is embedded in my family's culture and being. I also realize the impact of "habits" and "influences" that are embedded within our family.
