Communication and Cultural Diversity

My style of communication is pretty consistent among everyone.  Communicating has not always been easy for me.  My finance' really challenged me in the area of communication.  I really had to face the fact that I was not a good communicator and do something about it!  Throughout my studies over the past weeks, I have discovered that I discovered the "Platinum Rule" long before reading about such this week.  I am also more honest when communicating, in regards to admitting that I do not know, honest about my feelings and honest about input that is solicited from friends.  All of these took a lot a lot of work, as for so long, I was afraid to bare my true feelings, likes/dislikes to anyone, for fear that people would think different about me.

Communicating strategies that I could use to help me communicate even more effectively include:

  1. Being mindful when communicating with others, to avoid mindlessness.
  2. Being aware of my cultural myopia and being sensitive to the needs of others.
  3. Keeping in mind the other person, during communication, keeping in mind their thoughts, actions and feelings.  Also communicating with others in the manner that I would like to be communicated with.

  1. Hey Ro!

In your career or personal life can you explain when you have had to apply the 3R’s as a way to resolve or avoid conflict? I like the quote that you have that says ‘A nations’ weakness is measured by the way it treats its weakest members”. Great blog post!
