My Personal Research Journey - The Impact of Poor Housing Conditions on Young Children

My chosen topic for the research simulation is The Effects of Poor Housing Conditions on Young Children.  I have been pondering over the following questions:  What are the medical and behavioral effects of poor living conditions on children?, How much of an impact does inadequate housing and homelessness have on children? and What are ways in which public policy, can improve the overall wellness of children, as it relates to housing?

I selected this topic because it is dear to my heart.  It was tough for me to make this decision.  My other topic, I was considering, was The Impact of Multiple Living Arrangements on Young Children-Birth  - 8.  Although I see evidence of both of these topics on a daily basis,  I selected Poor Housing Conditions because roughly 70% of the children, in my Head Start program, reside in inadequate living conditions. So many times, teachers see manifestations of such in the classroom.  Many of our children view the classroom as a safe place.  To me, that's a good, as well as, bad thing.  I was taught that "home" was a "haven".  Home is were one should feel safe.  I selected this topic because I want to research the effects and impact of Housing Conditions, mainly public housing/section 8/subsidized housing units, on young children.  I want to know if housing affects behavior (mental health)  and physical development of children, as it does health wise.  I want to know what improvements can be recommended for Community Development and Housing initiatives in the United States.  I want to play an integral role in ensuring changes are made to improve the housing standards, as well as, sustainability of housing standards, in urban and rural communities.  Children do not ask to be born.  Children do not have the luxury of selecting their home environment.  At the very least, we owe it to children to ensure their safety and wellness while in their haven...the place we call home.
